Edge colocation is an emerging priority for any organization concerned with the future of cloud infrastructure. Enterprises looking to bring their hybrid-cloud services closer to remote users, service providers seeking faster delivery of content, and mobile providers anticipating 5G all are focused on the edge.

Cloud providers such as AWS (AMZN), Google (GOOGL), Microsoft (MSFT), and Equinix (EQIX) are responding with edge points of presence (POPs). And a growing roster of newer companies such as EdgeConnex and Vapor IO say they have connectivity optimized for the edge with innovative techniques.

In North America, these locations match the more popular public data center sites for the cloud titans. But Vapor IO and EdgeConnex also have moved into cities the titans have deemed second-tier, creating fresh opportunities for enterprise connectivity while heralding the future reach of mobile 5G services as well.

The Top Edge Cloud Cities in North America

So far, the leading cloud providers have identified at least 15 cities apiece in North America as housing POPs that deliver lower-latency services closer to customer premises. The most popular cities — common to the networks of AWS, Google Cloud Platform, Microsoft Azure, and Equinix —are the following:

  • Atlanta, Ga.
  • Chicago, Ill.
  • Dallas, Tx.
  • Denver, Colo.
  • Miami, Fla.
  • Los Angeles, Calif.
  • Seattle, Wash.
  • Silicon Valley locations (Palo Alto, San Jose, Santa Clara, Calif.)
  • Toronto, Ontario
